Ben Hogan – What's Inside

All Five Lessons,
Distilled

Our CliffsNotes outline breaks down every chapter of Hogan's legendary book — the exact fundamentals he used to become the most precise ball-striker in history, organized so you can reference them at the range.

01
The Grip
Left hand placement, V alignment, right hand overlap, pressure points — the foundation everything else is built on.
02
Stance & Posture
Foot angles, knee flex, arm position, weight distribution — Hogan's precise setup that creates live tension before you swing.
03
The Backswing
The waggle, swing plane, shoulder-hip sequencing, and how to create the tension that powers the downswing.
04
The Downswing
Start with the hips — always. The chain reaction that generates exponential clubhead speed through impact.
05
Summary & System
The complete repeatable swing, ball position, club selection adjustments, and Hogan's 6-month practice plan.

The Principles That Changed Golf

One Swing for Every Club

Hogan's system uses the exact same swing mechanics on every shot. Adjust only your stance width — the swing itself never changes.

Hips Before Hands — Always

Starting the downswing with your hips creates a chain reaction through shoulders, arms, and hands that generates far more speed than hands-first ever could.

The Plane Is Everything

Staying on the correct swing plane through the backswing makes the downswing automatic. Miss the plane and you're compensating on every shot.

The Waggle Is a Practice Swing

Hogan called the waggle highly undervalued. It telegraphs your swing path to your muscles and sets the tempo for the shot ahead.

Tension Is Power

Restricting hip turn while maximizing shoulder turn creates elastic tension. The greater the tension, the faster your hips fire — and there's no such thing as hips that move too fast.

The Follow-Through Is Automatic

If your address, backswing, and downswing initiation are correct, the follow-through takes care of itself. You don't need to think about it.

Hogan's 9 Checkpoints

Hogan reduced 25 years of professional experience into three areas — each with exactly three checkpoints. Nail all nine and the swing takes care of itself.

Address
  • 1 Grip — Club in fingers, V's aligned, inside muscles engaged.
  • 2 Stance — Right foot square, left foot 22° open, knees pointing in.
  • 3 Posture — Weight on heels, back erect, elbows tucked, live tension established.
Backswing
  • 1 Waggle — Rehearse your path, set your tempo, synchronize your body.
  • 2 Initiation — Hands, arms, and shoulders move simultaneously; shoulders pull the hips.
  • 3 Plane — Stay on the inclined plane from ball to shoulders throughout the entire backswing.
Downswing
  • 1 Hips First — Turn hips left to initiate. Not hands. Not shoulders. Hips.
  • 2 Hit Hard — Drive through with hips, shoulders, arms, and hands in that order.
  • 3 Supinate — Left wrist begins supinating just before impact, driving the arc wide and fast.
"A bad swing is tiring. A good swing is a physical pleasure."

"The average golfer's problem isn't one of physical ability — it's one of knowing what to do."
